It can be pressed, joined, rolled, or formed on a wheel. Different methods leave different traces in the finished shape. A vessel built from coils may develop differently from one shaped by turning on a wheel. The consistency of the material and the way it is supported influence which forms can be made and how they retain their shape.<\/p>\n<p>Drying is an important stage before firing. Water leaves the shaped object, and the material can shrink as it dries. Differences in thickness or the way parts are joined can affect this process. Once the object is sufficiently dry, firing produces changes that make it harder and less able to return to its earlier workable condition.
